What’s happening in the Tampa Bay tech/entrepreneur/nerd scene (Week of Monday, November 4, 2019)

Tampa is the best small tech market in North America, and if you look at what techies are doing here — largely in their spare time, week after week — you’ll see why. They’re getting together, sharing their knowledge, exchanging ideas, hatching plans, helping each other, making friends, and building a community.

Here’s what’s happening in Tampa Bay this week!

This weekly list is posted as a voluntary service to the Tampa tech community. With the notable exceptions of Tampa iOS Meetup and Coders, Creatives and Craft Beer — both of which I run — most of this information comes from Meetup.com, EventBrite, and other local event announcement sites. I can’t guarantee the accuracy of the dates and times listed here; if you want to be absolutely sure that the event you’re interested in is actually taking place, please contact the organizers!

Monday, November 4

On Monday, the coworking space Catapult Lakeland will host FUNDamentals: The Joinery Founders Jon and Sarah Bucklew. It’ll feature Jon and Sarah Bucklew, founders of Seventeen20, a handcrafted, industrial modern furniture design company, and The Joinery, a food hall, and craft brewery, and they’ll talk about one of the most difficult startup tasks: securing funding.

Tuesday, November 5

Hey, programmers! On Tuesday night, there are a couple of “What’s new” presentations that you might be interested in: C# 8 is here, what’s new? in St. Pete, and What’s new in Laravel 6 (the PHP framework) in Tampa.

Wednesday, November 6

The upcoming Tampa Bay Scrum Masters Guild meetup will feature Fred Mastropasqua presenting Scrum@Scale, created by Jeff Sutherland (one of the signatories of the Agile Manifesto and one of the creators of the Scrum development process) and described as “A framework within which networks of Scrum teams operating consistently with the Scrum Guide can address complex adaptive problems, while creatively delivering products of the highest possible value.”

Thursday, November 7

Disrupt the Bay bills itself as “a health tech conference with a cause,” that cause being pediatric cancer. It will feature a number of panels including one for healthcare leadership, a health tech mentoring panel featuring Dr. Richard Munassi of Tampa Bay Wave and Brian Kornfeld of Synapse Florida, a keynote by Jay Samit, author of Disrupt You!, and a VIP reception.

Friday, November 7

The Lean Coffee premise is simple: build better agile communities by holding structured, collaboratively-steerd agile discussions of Agile over coffee — and nice and early, so that you can still get to work on time! There are two happening in the area on Friday — one in Tampa, and the other in St. Pete.

Chris Hallbeck’s motivational trick

Chris Hallbeck’s “Avoiding” comic.

Click the comic to see its source.

If you need motivation to work on a project that you’ve been putting off for a long time, or are hamstrung with regret about putting it off for so long, Chris Hallbeck’s time-travel motivational trick might be just what you need. Who among us hasn’t wanted to go back in time at least once for a do-over?

Thanks to Peach Flambée for the find!

What’s happening in the Tampa Bay tech/entrepreneur/nerd scene (Week of Monday, October 28, 2019)

After a couple of weeks off in the Philippines, I’m back, and so is my weekly list of tech, entrepreneur and nerd events happening in and around the Tampa Bay area, the best small tech market in North America! After a day’s work of developing software, hardware, tech services, space tech and more, Tampa Bay’s techies get together to share our knowledge, work on passion projects, build things, or hang out over a meal and some drinks. We do the things that a great community does, and those things are listed here on Global Nerdy every week.

Monday, October 28

SecureSet, one of the driving forces behind Tampa Bay’s growing cybersecurity scene, holds a tour of their offices every Monday. You’ll see where they do their thing, learn about their program offerings and find out what sets they apart. You’ll also meet their campus director, observe a class (when available), learn about career services and financing, and/or chat with an admissions specialist.

Tuesday, October 29

Coders, Creatives, and Craft Beer is Tampa’s hottest new techie social event, and the Hallowe’en edition happens Tuesday! Join your hosts Anitra Pavka and Joey deVilla at 7venth Sun Brewery in Seminole Heights for tasty beverages, tacos, great conversation, and a possible geek jam session! (If you play an acoustic musical instrument, bring it!)

Wednesday, October 30

We’re fortunate to have one of the Agile Manifesto’s signatories living here in Tampa Bay: Alistair Cockburn, the merry prankster of Agile and the creator of Heart of Agile, “a radically simpler approach to achieve outstanding outcomes.” Wednesday’s Heart of Agile meetup will feature masks — and unmasking! With the help of Heart of Agile collaboration cards, he’ll show you how to increase collaboration in your projects.

Thursday, October 31

If you want to get to know some of the people who’ve been driving Tampa Bay’s tech community forward for the past few years, just attend Geek Breakfast. Held on the last Thursday of every month at Jimbo’s Pit Bar-B-Q, this is an informal breakfast where the bright lights of Tampa’s tech scene enjoy a down-home breakfast, lots of coffee, and even more great conversation. I’ll be there this Thursday — will you?

Friday, November 1

The Lean Coffee premise is simple: build better agile communities by holding structured, collaboratively-steerd agile discussions of Agile over coffee — and nice and early, so that you can still get to work on time! There are two happening in the area on Friday — one in Clearwater, and the other in Carollwood.

Tential Tuesday happens tonight!

Here’s an accordion number to promote Tential Tuesday, the data/development pro gathering run by my friends at Tential’s Tampa office. I played it last Saturday at BarCamp Tampa Bay 2019 to promote tonight’s Tential Tuesday event:

Tonight’s Tential Tuesday event takes place at Valpak (1 Valpak Ave. N) at 6:00 p.m. and features Microsoft’s Buck Woody, Applied Data Scientist at Microsoft, whose talk is titled Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Deep Learning for the Data Professional. Here’s the abstract:

Whether you set up and operate data processing systems or write programs that use them, modern databases like Microsoft’s SQL Server have facilities to work with Machine Learning constructs. In this session, Buck Woody – a Data Scientist from Microsoft Engineering – will explain Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, all with examples from the SQL Server Platform. You’ll see practical examples of ML, AI and DL, right within the SQL Server platform, and get resources to learn more and try out the examples on your own.

If you’re a techie in the Tampa Bay area, Tential Tuesdays are important. They’re one of the up-and-coming local networking events, and they’re organized by the hardest-working tech staffing company in the Bay. They’ve been making their presence known at events of all sizes, from five people to five hundred, and they’ve been connecting people to opportunities like no one else in the area. They’re my go-to people, and if you’re a techie in Tampa Bay, they should be yours too.

For more details about tonight’s Tential Tuesday, see the Meetup page for tonight’s event.

This is not a post sponsored by Tential — they don’t even know that I’m writing this. I’m just a fan, and their events are good.

What’s happening in the Tampa Bay tech/entrepreneur/nerd scene (Week of Monday, October 7, 2019)

What does Tampa Bay do after a big tech event like BarCamp Tampa Bay, where the Sun Coast’s brightest lights got together to share their knowledge and get together?

We get back to the business of being the best small tech market in North America (according to the commercial real estate firm CBRE, who are in the business of knowing these things). After a day’s work of developing software, hardware, tech services, space tech and more, we get together to share our knowledge, work on passion projects, build things, or hang out over a meal and some drinks. We do the things that a great community does, and those things are listed here on Global Nerdy every week.
