Here’s your weekly list of tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events — plus a little area tech news — for Tampa Bay and surrounding areas for the week of Monday, July 12 through Sunday, July 18, 2021.
This is a weekly service from Tampa Bay’s tech blog, Global Nerdy! For the past four years, I’ve been compiling a list of tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events happening in Tampa Bay and surrounding areas. There’s a lot going on in our scene here in “The Other Bay Area, on the Other West Coast”!

At the very least, that includes the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, but as far north as Ocala, as far south as Fort Myers, and includes Orlando and its surrounding cities.

Tampa Bay area news roundup
Tampa Bay’s tech scene had a banner first half of 2021
Here’s Tampa Bay Business Journal’s roundup of their biggest tech stories from the first half of the year.
Startup City: Six steps to a healthier startup ecosystem in St. Petersburg
“Successful communities have certain attributes that put them in the running to attract the talent that a vibrant economy requires. Fortunately, St. Petersburg is rich in the cultural and infrastructure assets that resonate with tech entrepreneurs and startup founders. These include a great quality of life, walkable urban spaces, a thriving arts scene, a research university that ranks in the top ten for U.S. patents, and a nearby airport that travelers named #2 in a national J.D. Power’s 2020 customer satisfaction study. And of course, weather and natural beauty that can’t be beat.”
TampaBay.Ventures Leads Investment Into Y Combinator Graduate Procoto
“TampaBay.Ventures has led an investment into St. Petersburg, Florida-based Procoto, a procurement and spend analysis platform for businesses. Procoto is a graduate of the famed Y Combinator startup accelerator program and the first Y Combinator graduate located in the Tampa Bay area. The investment represents the first investment from TampaBay.Ventures, a new venture capital firm dedicated to backing Tampa Bay’s most promising startups.”
Tampa Bay startup personality launches conference
“Allen Clary, author of Quit to Start, has been supporting entrepreneurs for years with organizations including Tampa Bay Wave, Upsurge Florida, and Tiger 21. Now he’s bringing his own thought leadership conference, Unlock Your Future Now, to Tampa Aug 27 through 29. In addition to Allen, speakers also include Janel Laravie, Johnny Crowder, Marcus Howard, Mariagrazia Indenbosch, Garyn Angel, Kaylan Boss, Kat Stylez, Sasha Jovicic, Holly Callaway, and Adam Anderson.”
Tampa startup, Black Stock Footage, wins Florida pitch competition
“The idea emerged as all the events around Black Lives Matter unfolded and Lee’s clients began requesting more Black representation in their video projects. When Lee searched multiple stock footage platforms, he quickly recognized a problem: A substantial lack of stock footage depicting Blacks in ordinary, real life circumstances. Not only was there no one-stop shop for such content, but piecing it together was a challenge. He started mulling it over with Edgerton-Maloy, his fiance, and they came up with the solution: Create a new platform designed to provide the kind of footage that was lacking.”

I landed someplace nice, and so can you!
Some of you who know that I joined Auth0 in October have been asking what it’s like now that Auth0 has been acquired by Okta.
These headlines should be an indicator:
- The CEO of Okta asked his 3,500 employees to email him about where they’re going on vacation, to remind them about the importance of taking breaks
- Okta (OKTA) Outpaces Stock Market Gains: What You Should Know
- Okta CEO says total addressable identity and access management market near $80B
- 1 Cybersecurity Stock With an $80 Billion Market Opportunity
I am a Senior Developer Advocate at Auth0, and there’s an opening on my team for the same position.
Here’s a quick description of the job:
As a Developer Advocate at Auth0, your job is to empower developers to innovate and secure their apps with Auth0. Developer advocates have two main focuses. The first is to educate developers about Auth0 and identity through speaking at events, creating live and recorded video content, writing, appearing on podcasts, and other creative mediums. The second is to serve the larger developer community by answering questions and listening to feedback on forums, GitHub, social media, and Slack and Discord servers. You’ll then take that information and share it with other marketing, engineering, and documentation teams at Auth0 to help improve our developer experience. These two objectives also include working on programs like Auth0 Apollo Program, Auth0 Ambassadors, and Avocado Labs, collaborating with engineering teams, working on open source libraries, and building internal tooling and reporting applications. For all of these tasks, you will measure your impact both quantitatively and qualitatively and adjust course as needed.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- 3+ years experience as a developer in front end or backend technologies like JavaScript, Python, PHP, etc.
- You find joy in serving the community and helping fellow developers get better at their jobs.
- You’re an educator at heart who loves teaching developers how to build amazing things.
- You’re comfortable taking complex topics and making them accessible to developers of different experience levels.
- You enjoy speaking in front of groups of developers at conferences and meetups.
- Writing excites you – part of teaching is developing content!
- You will be the first to try new APIs and products. You’re not afraid to roll your sleeves up to write code snippets and sample applications. Even better, you can articulate ways they can be improved to make all developers’ lives easier.
- You are a strong independent contributor, but you enjoy collaborating with teammates and multi-functional teams.
- You are comfortable learning multiple skills simultaneously and managing multiple projects at once.
- Your passion for technology inspires you to explore your curiosity; you love learning new things.
- You find a fast-paced, constantly iterative environment engaging and stimulating.
- You can write and speak proficiently in English.
- Up to 30% travel (once it’s safe to do so).
The position is a remote position, but since it will involve travel within the US and Canada, we’re looking for someone who lives in either of those countries.

Here’s your weekly list of tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events — plus a little area tech news — for Tampa Bay and surrounding areas for the week of Monday, July 5 through Sunday, July 11, 2021.
By “Tampa Bay and surrounding areas”, this list covers events that originate or are aimed at the area within 100 miles of the Port of Tampa. At the very least, that includes the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, but as far north as Ocala, as far south as Fort Myers, and includes Orlando and its surrounding cities.
This week’s events
Don’t forget that the week follows the holiday weekend, with Monday being a holiday, and a lot of people taking at least part of the week off. This the one of the slower times of the year, so make sure you double-check with its organizers to be sure that it’s actually taking place!

Tampa Bay area news roundup
‘Visitor economy’ and ‘cultural infrastructure’ propel Tampa, St. Pete metro area to ‘best city’ honors — The Tampa Bay area has been named the number one city in Florida and number 22 in the U.S., according to a study conducted by Resonance Consultancy, a Vancouver-based global advisor on tourism, real estate, and economic development.
So many Tampa Bay mobile dev job openings, so few applicants — While checking LinkedIn earlier this week, I noticed that there were a lot of iOS and Android developer jobs in the Tampa Bay area, and many of them didn’t have any applicants (or at least any applicants who applied via LinkedIn).
Tampa Bay tech grows as more workers move to the area — Tampa Bay is ranked one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, and tech is one of its fastest-growing industries, accounting for nearly 8% of the entire workforce, according to CompTIA.
Tampa Bay companies raised another $13M in June — A small but mighty amount of funding deals kept the Tampa Bay technology scene holding strong in June. The group of companies raised just over $13 million for the month, nearly identical to May’s $13 million total.
Tijuana Flats is the latest major brand to partner with Tampa tech company — Tampa-based technology company SiteZeus has announced its latest partnership with Tijuana Flats, adding to a long line of restaurant industry giants it currently helps to better find where companies should open new locations.

While checking LinkedIn this morning, I noticed that there were a lot of iOS and Android developer jobs in the Tampa Bay area, and many of them didn’t have any applicants (or at least any applicants who applied via LinkedIn).
I quickly cobbled the image above from screenshots of LinkedIn’s Jobs sections that I took this morning. If you know UIKit from SwiftUI or can tell your RecyclerViews from your ListViews and either live in Tampa Bay or want to move to our sunny shores, there’s a lot of opportunity right here, right now.
It’s nice work if you can get it
Want to know how much you can make as an Android developer? Here’s what ZipRecruiter has to say:
Here’s ZipRecruiter’s graph for iOS developers:
…and trust me on this one: If you can combine mobile development skills with people skills, you can make a little more.
Learn Android development with GDG SunCoast
We’ve got a GDG (Google Developer Group) right here in Tampa Bay — GDG SunCoast — and they host an Android Study Jam every Wednesday evening. It’s an online event that’s free of charge to attend, and they walk you through Google’s official Android/Kotlin tutorials. It’s a great place to get to know other locals with an interest in Android development, ask questions, and even win prizes!
GDG SunCoast’s next Android Study Jam happens on Wednesday, July 7 at 7:00 p.m..
I’m going to try and catch as many of these as I can. I hope to see you there!
Returning soon: The Programmers of Portables meetup!
A few years back, I started the Tampa iOS Meetup with Angela Don, and over time, it mutated into Programmers of Portables.
The pandemic, my job search, and a lot of work at Auth0 have kept me from holding a meetup in some time, but I’m already working on plans to bring it back. Watch this space, and get ready to learn iOS, Android, and IoT development tricks!
Speaking of Auth0…
Keep an eye on the Auth0 developer blog, where I’m one of the editors. I’m working on a lot of articles about mobile and Python development, and you’ll start seeing them there soon!
Once again, it’s time to list Tampa Bay podcasts that you, the Global Nerdy reader, might find informative, interesting, and illuminating!
In the last list, I listed the podcasts from longest-running to newest. As is the tradition with this list, I’m listing them from newest to longest-running this time. They are:
- Space and Things
- Friends That Code
- The Mike Dominick Show
- The 6 Figure Developer
- Thunder Nerds
And now, the podcasts…
Space and Things is the newest podcast on this list, and it’s about…well, you get three guesses. Just read its name.
Space and Things features two hosts:
- Emily Carney: A veteran of the United States Navy, Carney became a freelance writer back in 2008 and started a blog called This Space Available, which is hosted by the National Space Society. In 2011, Carney founded a facebook group Space Hipsters, of which I am a member. Originally intended to be a place to share news and insights amongst friends, this community has now grown to close to 20,000 members including astronauts, engineers, scientists, historians and space flight enthusiasts from around the globe.
- Dave Giles: Giles is a singer/songwriter from London, England who has always had a passion for space flight. Since his early years he’s been looking skyward and though he ended up wielding a guitar for a living, space exploration is alway on his mind and one of his most popular songs is about astronaut Gene Cernan, ‘The Last Man On The Moon’.In 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, Giles visited all of the crewed space vehicles flown by NASA from Freedom 7 to the Space Shuttle Orbiters.
Here are Space and Things’ podcasts since the last time I did a roundup of Tampa Bay podcasts:
- STP 43 — We’re joined by author Elizabeth Howell to discuss her new book ‘Leadership Moments from NASA – Achieving The Impossible’ which is co-written with former Canadian Astronaut Dr. Dave Williams who is also a former director of Space and Life Sciences at NASA. The book is set for release on July 6th.
- STP 42 — This week we’re joined again by Christina Korp, this time to talk all about her organisation ‘Space For A Better World’ and the the zero gravity flight that is coming up with Apollo 16 moonwalker Charlie Duke. We hear all about her recent flight with Charlie and Nicole Stott, and their tour of the Artemis rocket and space craft at Kennedy Space Center.
- STP 41 — This year’s Spacefest will take place from July 15th- 18th at the JW Marrito Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. We asked one of the organisers Kelsey Poor to come and talk to us about what it is, how it started and why you want to be there. Spacefest is organised by Novaspace, an online store for space art, astronaut autographs and memorabilia. Definitely worth checking out.
- STP 40 — This week we talk about Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s Space Coast. We discuss a few of our favourite parts and what not to miss, plus some tips for what to see and do around the area.
- STP 39 — This week we’re joined by not one, but two astronauts! Mike Massimino and Garrett Reisman have just started their own podcast ‘2 Funny Astronauts’ – so we asked them if they’d like to come and talk to us all about it and to speak more about life as an astronaut and some of the other wonderful things they’ve been able to do. Not only were they funny, but it’s also pretty damn inspirational.
- STP 38 — This week we were joined by legendary NASA flight director Gerry Griffin to discuss the 50th anniversary of Apollo 14 and Apollo 15. We obviously had some other questions for him too, but we really want to hear about those missions, and boy did he deliver. At 86 years old, he remembered things in such incredible detail and was an absolute pleasure to talk to. This was very kind set up by Max Kaiserman of Luna Replicas (check out episode 15 of our podcast), so he also joined us for this wonderful discussion. We really hope that Max can join us for more chats in the future, a true friend of the podcast.
- STP 37 — There have been some things happen in the space industry this week that we’re not happy about, so we speak about that but also offer a positive story as well as we talk to Czarina Salido, founder of Taking Up Space, a charity which sends Native American girls to Space Camp.
- STP 36 — It’s finally happened. We’ve got a whole show dedicated to Skylab. That’s right, this week Emily talks us through 5 random facts about Skylab which maybe you knew, or maybe you didn’t, but either way, it’s something she’s incredibly passionate about and thus very entertaining and educational at the same time.
Friends That Code
Friends That Code is hosted by Mike Traverso, whom locals may know from the Tampa Bay Google Developers Group meetup and other Google-y events. In this podcast, he showcases…
…some amazing people I know that just happen to write code for a living. Whether they started off intending to code or just happened into it, we get to hear about the types of people you’ll meet, things you’ll get to do, jobs you’ll have along the way, and advice from some awesome coders along the way!

You’ve probably seen the hosts at local meetups and conferences; they’re Frederick Philip Von Weiss and Brian Hinton.
Thunder Nerds is sponsored by a company that’s near and dear to me, Auth0! That’s partly because they have a great authentication, authorization, and identity service, and partly because I work there in my role as a Senior R&D Content Engineer!

Here’s your weekly list of tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events — plus a little area tech news — for Tampa Bay and surrounding areas for the week of Monday, June 28 through Sunday, July 4, 2021.
Don’t forget that this coming weekend is the holiday weekend, with the 4th of July falling on the Sunday. This the one of the slowest weeks of the year, when many people take their holidays, so if your event is scheduled on or near the 4th, make sure you double-check with its organizers to be sure that it’s actually taking place!
