It’s 2019, and if you’re writing code in JavaScript/ECMAScript, you should be doing it in ES6 (a.k.a. ES2015) at the very least.

After all, ES6 was released back in June 2015 — long enough ago that back then, I was still explaining to some friends and family what “Uber” was. Since then, we’ve had ES7 (a.k.a. ES2016), ES8 (a.k.a. ES2017), and ES9 (a.k.a. ES2019), with each iteration adding new features to increase the power and expressiveness of the language. If you’re not availing yourself of these new versions and their features, you might be limiting or even hindering yourself. If you write code in JavaScript, you should at least be aware of modern JavaScript/ECMAScript features and how to use them!

Tampa Bay JavaScript/ECMAScript developers have an opportunity to get up to speed this Wednesday, May 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Suncoast Developers Guild in St. Pete. The Women Who Code Tampa meetup are holding their meetup then, and the topic will be Modern Features for Javascript: Foundations of ECMAScript (ES6+).

Here’s their description of the meetup:

Build upon your pre-existing knowledge of JavaScript by adding modern features to your projects. In this talk, we’ll cover arrow functions, template literals, spread operators, and plenty of other things you’ve seen floating around in others’ repos. It is recommended for you to have a basic understanding of JavaScript for this talk, but all are welcome to come learn!

Local designer-turned-front end developer Taylor Cox will be presenting. I had the privilege of meeting Taylor through the Hospitality Hackathon that Sourcetoad held in 2017; hers was the team that won the event.

Months ago, I told Frédéric Harper, my friend and former colleague from our Microsoft days, about the opening for developer advocate at npm, because I knew he’d be great at the job. He ended up landing the position, which for any developer advocate/evangelist/relations person should’ve been a dream gig.

Except it didn’t turn out that way.

Fred was recently just laid off from npm — and not by someone he reports to, but a third-party “downsizer” (think of George Clooney’s and Anna Kendrick’s character’s jobs in the film Up in the Air). Adding insult to injury, he would be eligible for severance (two weeks’ worth of pay) if an only if he signed a non-disparagement clause.

It’s certainly not fitting with the image that the company — on whom so many projects rely — has traditionally projected.

Happy AR Painter: An augmented reality tribute to Bob Ross, which turns your iDevice into a Google Tilt Brush-like thing that lets you paint in 3D space. This one had a lot of people at RWDevCon playing with it well after my workshop:

Raykea: In 300-ish lines of code, you’ll be able to write an app that does a little more than IKEA Place. Not only does it let you place virtual furniture in the room you’re in to see what it looks like, it also finds vertical surfaces and covers them with posters!

BaedekAR: The name’s a play on “Baedeker”, and this app is a museum app in the making. Point it at a known work of art, and it’ll draw an AR annotation telling you the title of the work, and an AR hotspot that you can tap to get more information about the work. This is one that I’m trying to promote to my cruise industry customers.

BaedekAR 3D: This app takes the BaedekAR app into the third dimension by having it use a new feature in ARKit 2.0: 3D object recognition! We’ll use this to detect 3D objects in the real world and draw AR annotations so you know what they are.
