ChatGPT fails to answer a classic math problem with a twist

ChatGPT’s source of strength — its ability to create sentences that make sense by using the previous set of words to predict the next one — is also a weakness. You can see this weakness by giving it the following prompt:

The obvious answer — obvious to us humans anyway — is to ignore the buckets and simply fill the shot glass. Problem solved.

ChatGPT’s answer wasn’t just wrong and convoluted, but also a waste of money and bourbon:

1. Fill the 5-liter bucket to its maximum capacity.
2. Pour the water from the 5-liter bucket into the 10-liter bucket. This leaves you with 5 liters of water in the 10-liter bucket and an empty 5-liter bucket.
3. Fill the shot glass with bourbon until it is completely full.
4. Pour the bourbon from the shot glass into the 5-liter bucket.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 nine more times, pouring 10 shots of bourbon (50 milliliters each) into the 5-liter bucket.
6. Once you have poured all 10 shots of bourbon into the 5-liter bucket, you will have a total of 500 milliliters (10 shots x 50 milliliters) of bourbon in the 5-liter bucket.
7. Now, carefully pour the 500 milliliters of bourbon from the 5-liter bucket into the 10-liter bucket. The 10-liter bucket will now contain the desired 50 milliliters of bourbon.

By following these steps, you can measure exactly 50 milliliters of bourbon using the given buckets and shot glass.

Note that in step 2, the liquid isn’t bourbon, but water.

ChatGPT has the solution in step 3, but it gamely continues with an additional four steps.

Steps 4, 5, and 6 are a transfer of a half-liter (a little more than a pint, or two-thirds of a standard whiskey bottle) of bourbon into the five-liter bucket.

In step 7, the final step in this drawn-out process, you pour the bourbon from the five-liter bucket into the ten-liter bucket, which currently contains five liters of water. Contrary to what ChatGPT tells you, you do not have exactly 50 milliliters of bourbon measured out in the 10-liter bucket; you have 5.5 liters of a liquid that depending on your point of view could be called:

  • Criminally diluted bourbon
  • Tainted water
  • Uncarbonated bourbon-flavored White Claw

ChatGPT gets the answer to this question wrong because it’s been largely trained on content published on the internet, and some of that content includes math problems of the form “You have a bucket of size x, and another bucket of size y. How would you measure a quantity of size z?” In these problems, you’re usually asked to measure out a quantity of water, and there usually isn’t a bucket that’s the same size as the quantity you’re trying to measure.

ChatGPT has no actual understanding of the problem. It’s simply spitting out words to follow a pattern of text that’s part of the data it was trained on.

About this list

How do I put this list together? It’s largely automated. I have a collection of Python scripts in a Jupyter Notebook that scrape Meetup and Eventbrite for events in categories that I consider to be “tech,” “entrepreneur,” and “nerd.” The result is a checklist that I review. I make judgement calls and uncheck any items that I don’t think fit on this list.

In addition to events that my scripts find, I also manually add events when their organizers contact me with their details.

What goes into this list? I prefer to cast a wide net, so the list includes events that would be of interest to techies, nerds, and entrepreneurs. It includes (but isn’t limited to) events that fall under any of these categories:

  • Programming, DevOps, systems administration, and testing
  • Tech project management / agile processes
  • Video, board, and role-playing games
  • Book, philosophy, and discussion clubs
  • Tech, business, and entrepreneur networking events
  • Toastmasters (because nerds really need to up their presentation game)

USF’s information session on their “Pathway to Computing” graduate certificate program – Friday, June 23rd

On Friday, June 23rd at 1:00 p.m., University of South Florida (USF) is hosting an online information session about their Pathway to Computing graduate certificate. It’s a step towards getting a graduate degree — completing this program earns you priority admission to USF’s master’s degree in computer science program with no GRE required.

If you’re interested in getting a graduate degree in computer science, but have never taken a computer science course or don’t have coding experience, but want to start a coding career, this program is for you!

Scenes and slides from Tampa Devs’ “Selling Yourself: The Art of Interviewing” meetup

Last night (Wednesday, June 21), Tampa Devs held a meetup at Embarc Collective with a great topic: Selling Yourself: The Art of Interviewing. They brought in some domain experts, who are also friends of this blog: Pitisci & Associates’ Craig Darrell, Brian Dodd, and Stephen Rideout, who were there to show us how to land a job.

Craig gave the presentation, which was eagerly absorbed by the audience, a lot of whom were first-time attendees of a Tampa Devs meetup. This was a crowd that was ready for their first or next job, and they had questions aplenty. Luckily for them, Craig, Brian, and Stever were there to answer them, and it looks like they had even more questions to answer after Craig’s talk.

I ended up deep in very enjoyable conversations with all sorts of people, and ended up talking about all sorts of things from AI ethics and Timnit Gebru, to C++ programming and the Deadly Diamond of Death, how I got into developer relations, and my proposed talk for how computers work “under the hood,” complete with a little assembly programming primer.

(And yes, I did a couple of accordion numbers.)

You might know how to program in a high-level language like JavaScript, Python, PHP, and so on, but do you know what’s happening at the machine level? Have you wondered what pointers and references actually are, or the difference between the stack and the heap, and for that matter, what a “stack overflow” is?

Richard “.NET Rocks” Campbell on the next decade of software development

What might the next decade of software development look like? Richard Campbell has some ideas and shares them in this talk from the 2023 edition of the NDC London conference.

I know Richard from my former life at Microsoft. He’s the host of the .NET Rocks and RunAs Radio podcasts, and long-time developer, consultant, and tech company founder, and a damn good storyteller.

The first story he tells is about “The Animal Highway,” the space between his and his neighbors’ house, which is frequented by bears. This actually made me laugh out loud, since when I last saw Richard at a backyard barbecue at his house, we had to scare away a bear cub by being noisy. He picked up a pot and barbecue tongs, I picked up my accordion, and with whoops, hollers, and random squeezebox chords, we chased it away into the woods.

One of the themes that runs through his talk is that technology has grown in leaps and bounds. Near the start of the talk, he uses the example of the Cray X-MP. In 1985, it was the world’s most powerful computer. It sold for millions of dollars and required 200kW of power, which could perform 1.9 at gigaflops (billions of floating-point operations per second). It was used to model nuclear explosions and compute spaceflight trajectories.

The iPad 2 from 2011 also performs at 1.9 gigaflops, but it sold for hundreds of dollars instead of millions, and ran on battery power instead of requiring its own power plant. As Richard summed it up: “26 years later, the most powerful computer in the world is now a device we give to children. And they play Candy Crush on it.”

Near the end of the talk, Richard uses another example of the technological changes that have happened in a lifetime. The picture above shows the first transistor ever, which was made in Bell Labs in 1947.

“It’s pretty hard to look at that,” he said, pointing to the photo of that transistor, “and think ‘M1 chip’.”
